      Dear Readers!

The planning of an academic or non-academic career ideally already starts during the PhD. Therefore we would like to direct your attention to the workshop “Careers Beyond Research: applying your skills outside academia” which will take place on 14 January. The Gender Equality and Diversity Unit and Human Resources Development are offering a three-semester curriculum for career planning for women researchers: "Recognising potential. Developing visions. Shaping the Future. Women in academia plan their careers" for which an information session is planned in January.

Like in the previous years the Christmas Special of the International Café is approaching. We will celebrate the festivities at a traditional Austrian Christmas market with Glühwein and Punsch. This will take place on 16 December, starting at 6 pm. During the Christmas break you can reach us during our usual consultation times. We are only closed on 24/25 December and 31 December/1 January.

      Workshop: Careers Beyond Research

There are a number of options outside academia that are open to Ph.D. graduates and postdoctoral researchers. This workshop aims at highlighting a number of these careers and explore what particular options might be compatible with individuals. During their career, researchers develop a number of skills that they can utilise in a variety of other positions, whether these are related to their research or not. The trainer Dr. Joanna Young will include overviews of a variety of different job types, case studies of researchers who have moved into different careers and provide resources to help participants explore their options. In addition, participants will be invited to complete an individual ElementsTM skills analysis to help them with future job applications and interviews. This has proven very popular with researchers and it is designed to help them reflect on their own skills and experience so that they can communicate these effectively in written applications and interviews.

When? 14 January 2016, 9 am till 6 pm
Where? Center for Doctoral Studies, Berggasse 7, 1090 Vienna (Seminarroom 2, 2nd floor)

You can register online for the workshop!

“Steps to Success” supports female researchers to successfully plan their careers. The programme starts out from the existing academic qualifications of the participants and deals with shaping one's professional future. This initiates a process of reflection and action that supports women in planning their careers in a way that is increasingly satisfying for them. The three-semester curriculum for career planning for women researchers starts in February 2016. An information will take place on 11 January, application deadline is 19 January.

      International Café – Christmas Special

On 16 December, the International Café will take place at the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt at the Freyung, a traditional Viennese Christmas market.

The International Café is an initiative of the Center for Doctoral Studies especially directed at international PhD students – but of course also welcomes all Austrian PhD students. Doctoral candidates can exchange views on the challenges a new country/town/university can present, meet colleagues, extend their network or just have a nice evening with other PhD students.

We will meet on Wednesday, 16 December at 6 pm at the first punch hut when coming from the Schottengasse: http://www.altwiener-markt.at/standplan.html

We are looking forward to meeting you there, and invite the first 20 doctoral candidates who arrive to a Glühwein. Of course not only international PhDs are welcome!
